What is GSM?

Peacock Alley Jubilee Bath Towel LinensforLivingIf you’re in the market for new towels, you’ve probably run across the term GSM. What does this mean? And why does it matter?

GSM is the standard measurement for determining the weight and quality of fabrics. The acronym GSM stands for “grams per square meter.” The higher the GSM of a fabric, the better the quality. This rule may sound like the false belief surround thread count and sheet quality, but with GSM, it’s different. This measurement has to do with the weight of the fabric, so it deals with the absorbency, performance, and quality of the fabric’s construction.

This standard is especially important with towels, since they are designed to absorb liquids. A towel’s GSM defines how dense it is, which affects how much it can absorb.

Towels will typically range from 300 to 900 GSM. Those with a lower GSM will obviously be less absorbent, but these towels may have a different purpose, such as a kitchen towel. Towels with high GSM measurements, such as 800-900, are going to be very dense, heavy, and plush. However, they will also be very absorbent. These are your luxury towels.

Now, even if your towel has a high GSM, you’ll want to check the type of fiber it’s made from. The best towels will be made only with long-staple cotton. Also, the fabric pile will be higher.

We offer a wide selection of luxury bath towels, ranging anywhere from 530 GSM to 900 GSM. We know that there’s nothing better than stepping out of the shower into the plushness and warmth of a soft, absorbent towel.
